What is a Procedure Text?

Procedure text is a text that explains or helps us how to make or use something. Its social function is to describe how something is completely done through a sequence of steps. Communicative purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a sequence of actions or steps.

  • procedure Text (tips) is a text that explain how to do an activity.
  • procedure Text (recipe) is a text that expain how to make food or beverage.


Purpose of Procedure Text?

  • to explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or steps.
  • to explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something.


Social Function of Procedure Text?

The social function of procedure text is to inform the reader about how to do something in sequence of steps. But actually each type of procedure text has its own function as below,

  • procedure text (tips) : to inform the reader how to do something through a sequence of steps.
  • procedure text (recipe) : to inform the reader how to make food or beverage through a sequence of steps.


Generic Structure of Procedure Text?

There are three generic structures in procedure text. The first is goals or purposes. The second is materials or tools. The third and the last are steps or methods. To know the text that we read is procedure or not is so simple. You can read the title of it. If the title is started with ‘how to make…’ or ‘how to use…’ it can be certainly defined that the text is procedure text.
  • goal : states what is going to do.
  • matherials : contain about things that we need to make/do something.
  • methods or steps : is a series of action to do or to make something.

Language Features of Procedure Text?
  • Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the last)
  • Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes. . . )
  • Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
  • Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, boil, cook.
  • Using Simple Present Tense.

How to Use Polaroid Camera

How to Make Chocolate Cake



        Dry Material
  • 3 glasses of flour
  • 1 Spoon the baking soda
  • 1/5 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1/5 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 Scoop the coffee grounds

        Wet Material 1 in the Mixer
  • 5 Medium size eggs
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla flavoring

        Wet Material 2
  • 1/5 cup of chocolate milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups boiled water

        How to make
  1. First mix and stir dry ingredients, then set aside.
  2. Then shake using a wet material mixer 1 until the ingredients are evenly mixed, and slightly thickened. Then give vanilla flavoring, and shake again briefly.
  3. Then put the wet ingredients 1 into the dry ingredients. Also add chocolate milk and oil. Stir for a while, then shake with a mixer until smooth, and smooth.
